Chapter 13

James still retched at the foul taste of the gag the men in dark suits had previously shoved into his mouth. Though his stomach churned, at least now he wouldn’t have to suffer from its vile taste. Sitting on a small metal stool that grated under his weight, he looked about his surroundings, hoping to see something that would work in his favour. But there was nothing in sight that would aid him in his already failed attempt at an escape. With only one dim bulb dangling from the low ceiling, he couldn’t see much anyway. To make matters worse, the cellar was filled with a putrid stench that nearly made him puke. Had he not been conscious of the gag earlier, he might have choked on his own spew.

Angst-ridden, he desperately wished to be free from his predicament, but no matter how he struggled, the cable ties around his wrists remained tight; he wouldn’t be going anywhere for the time being. With a futile glance at his surroundings, he resigned himself to his fate, allowing himself to slump back down on the rough metal of the stool. His head spinning and his taste buds bittered, he became lost in his frenzied flow of thoughts, the only available respite from his disturbing reality. Why me? What wrong have I committed? What have I done to deserve such torment?

He had been blighted throughout his whole life; he was a walking tragedy. And now, at the lowest unimaginable point in his life, would he meet his end in this squalid and indifferent dump? Would his life be disregarded and forgotten? If his father did survive his injuries, would he even remember his only son? The idea of fading out of history frightened him. He didn’t want his life to end like this. He was too young, too innocent to be deserving of such a cruel fate.

Shaking the depressing thoughts from his mind, James remembered the one person who had been there for him in his most desperate times of need: his best friend, Simon. He was the one person who he could count on throughout his life, and he had no doubt that he would be contemplating his whereabouts at the present moment. If only you knew, Simon. If only you knew.

The familiar sound of a door being unlocked interrupted his thoughts. Returning to the reality surrounding him, James turned towards the rotating knob on the door to his right. With a final click, the door was eased open and two slim men in dark suits entered the room. James recognised the stony faces of the men who had dragged him into the room and bound him. Following shortly after them was a burly man in a familiar pinstriped suit. James instantly
